Belgium - Bruges & Ypres - 5 Days
Blankenberge, Bruges with a canal cruise, Ostend, Ypres, In Flanders Fields Museum, Pilkem Ridge & the Welsh Memorial
Monday Day 1: To Dover and our short sea crossing to Calais and on to Blankenberge and our home for the next four nights, the 3* Alfa Inn, with time to freshen up before your evening meal.
Tuesday Day 2: This morning we visit the neighbouring resort, Ostend. This “Queen of the Resorts” has been popular with British tourists for years. Take the morning to explore the centre of Ostend with its shopping arcades. We return to Blankenberge after lunch where the remainder of the day is free. We have not included an evening meal for the remainder of your stay to enable you to enjoy the many restaurants in the town.
Wednesday Day 3: Today is spent in “Flanders Fields”. We travel to Ypres where we have included admission to the Cloth Hall Museum, dedicated to the study of the First World War. It occupies the second floor of the Cloth Hall on the market square in the city centre. The building was largely destroyed by artillery during the war, but was afterwards reconstructed. In 1998 the original Ypres Salient Memorial Museum was refurbished and renamed In Flanders Fields Museum after the famous poem by Canadian John McCrae. After lunch we take a tour to Artillery Wood Cemetery, where Hedd Wyn is buried, Pilkem Ridge with the recently built Welsh Memorial and then to the largest British War Cemetery in the world, Tyne Cot. We return to Ypres with time for you to get your evening meal before the 8.00pm “Last Post” at the Menin Gate. The Last Post Ceremony has become part of the daily life in Ieper (Ypres) and the local people are proud of this simple but moving tribute to the courage and self-sacrifice of those who fell in defence of their town. We return to our hotel after the “Last Post”.
Thursday Day 4: If you set out to design a fairy-tale medieval town, it would be hard to improve on central Bruges, one of Europe's best preserved cities. Picturesque cobbled lanes and dreamy canals link photogenic market squares lined with soaring towers, historical churches and lane after lane of old whitewashed alms-houses. The day is spent here and you will have a two hour guided walking tour and canal cruise
Friday Day 5: We re-trace our footsteps back to Calais and our ferry to Dover and back home to Mid Wales.
