Naval History of Hampshire 5 Days

Naval History of Hampshire 5 Days

Historic Dockyard Portsmouth, Isle of Wight,Osborne House & Worthing

Thursday Day 1: After our pick-ups are complete we travel with comfort stops to Banbury for our lunch break then complete our journey to our home for the next 4 nights the 4* Hampshire Court Hotel, Basingstoke.

Friday Day 2:  Today is spent in Portsmouth.  The Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth is home to some of the most famous and historically important naval ships in the world. This includes the Mary Rose (separate admission ticket required), now allowing visitors unrestricted views of the ship, and HMS Victory, the world’s oldest commissioned warship. We can experience life on board HMS M.33, the only surviving Royal Navy ship from the First World War’s infamous and bloody Gallipoli campaign. Boathouse 4 captures traditional boatbuilding in action and also brings to life the stories of small boats in its ‘Forgotten Craft’ exhibition. HMS Warrior, the world’s first iron-hulled, armoured warship launched in 1860 that never fired a shot in anger. You will have all day in Portsmouth, explore Gunwharf Quays or visit the Spinnaker Tower before we return to our hotel.

Saturday Day 3: We travel to Portsmouth harbour for our 45 minute ferry trip from Fishbourne to the Isle of Wight. Here we can discover picturesque villages, spectacular cliffs, sandy beaches and rich farmlands. We visit Queen Victoria’s favourite seaside home, the magnificent Osborne House. We can visit the royal couple’s private apartments, state rooms and Queen Victoria’s beach where there is a bathing machine which the Queen used to get undressed in! Complementing the palace are stunning gardens and grounds which provide breath taking views. As Queen Victoria herself said, “It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot” and we are sure to agree. Following our memorable day out we board our ferry back to Portsmouth.

Sunday  Day 4: Today we travel through the South Downs to Worthing. Enjoy the many things on offer in this lovely resort. Worthing is a major town in a glorious location, with a history dating back to well before Roman times, Worthing became the archetypal Victorian seaside resort when people began to take notice of its winning combination of sunshine, sea, spectacular countryside and relatively easy access from London.

Monday Day 5: We start our journey home through the beautiful Cotswolds, stopping for a coffee break in Stow-on-the-Wold. Stow is the highest settlement in the Cotswold Hills. Stow’s large market square is a gem, the surrounding houses, shops and inns, in mellow Cotswold stone, represent a pleasing blend of styles, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. In the centre of the town, the medieval market cross is a reminder of the days when up to 20,000 sheep were herded, for sale, into this square.  We continue to Worcester for lunch. The city is best known for its magnificent Cathedral but is also famous for the world renowned Worcester Porcelain, the piquant Worcestershire Sauce and the most picturesque cricket ground in the country. We  continue our journey to Mid-Wales.
