Gems of the North East - 5 Days

Gems of the North East - 5 Days

River Wear Cruise, Crook Hall & Gardens, The Holy Island, Heatherslaw Railway, Whitley Bay, Necastle upon Tyne, Hawes & Richmond

Monday Day 1: We travel with comfort stops to Penrith for our lunch break. Leaving after lunch we travel east, following Hadrian’s Wall as close as we can to our home for the next 4 nights, the 4* Holiday Inn Hotel, where tea/coffee and a Danish pastry awaits you.

Tuesday Day 2: To Durham for our 10.15 cruise aboard the Prince Bishop River Cruiser on the beautiful River Wear. This spectacular hour long scenic cruise passes by a great many of the city's most celebrated sights from the unique perspective from the River Wear. Enjoy the tranquillity of the river as you admire the wonderful views of the castle and cathedral above you and spot wildlife along the way, accompanied by a lively and informative guide commentary so you can get the most out of what there is to see. Free time in the city  before we meet up again for our guided tour of Crook Hall & Gardens with a Jacobean drawing room, turret and gallery set in 4 acres of gardens including 2 walled gardens, a silver and white garden, an orchard, courtyard fountain, large moat pool and maze. We enjoy a scrumptious homemade cream tea  (homemade on that day with the added benefit that the cook will pass on recipes!)

Wednesday Day 3: We travel to Whitley Bay. From the late 19th century and into the 20th century the adverse effects of the decline of local coalmining and dependent industries in the area were ameliorated by the emergence of Whitley as a seaside holiday resort. The opening of the North Tyne Loop railway line in 1882, connecting the coastal villages to Newcastle, benefited the tourism industry. After free time here we travel to Newcastle upon Tyne, where you will see such icons as the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Tyne Bridge, the Sage Gateshead and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

Thursday  Day 4:  We meet our Blue Badge Guide for our full day coach guided tour. We begin at the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the epicentre of Christianity in Anglo Saxon times, and the birthplace of the Lindisfarne Gospels, one of the world's most precious books. We leave after lunch returning to the mainland to take a 20 minute single journey on the Heatherslaw Light Railway, England's most northerly steam-hauled railway. Then we visit Etal and Ford, two of the prettiest villages in Northumberland where we take in Lady Waterford Hall, awarded "Best Hidden Gem" for the pretty water coloured murals and fascinating stories of Lady Waterford's life including her friendship with Queen Victoria and John Ruskin, one of Britain's most influential watercolourists

Friday Day 5:   We start our journey home and stop for a coffee break in Richmond in the heart of North Yorkshire. We leave Richmond and make or way through the Yorkshire Dales National Park to Hawes for lunch at the Wensleydale Creamery. Here is the home of the famous Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese.  Enjoy free cheese tasting of over 20 varieties, and find mouth-watering accompaniments. Leaving after lunch we pass the Ribblehead Viaduct before re-joining the motorway taking us back home to Mid-Wales.

We wanted to thank you for a really great holiday to Northumberland. The coach was very comfortable and brilliantly driven. Dave was a great courier, entertaining us on route. The hotel was very good and in a great location. The days out were informative and the countryside beautiful. It was our first trip with you and we hope it will not be the last.
Jen & Pete
Just felt we had to let you know what a wonderful holiday we had on the Danube Cruise. We enjoyed it very much, everything was nice and so very well organised.
Once again an outstanding tour to the Tattoo - could not fault a thing. The trips out were great with lovely extras!
