In Flanders Fields - 4 Days

In Flanders Fields - 4 Days

Hedd Wynn Cemetery, Tyne Cot, Hooge Crater Museum, Lochnagar, Mametz, Albert, Thiepval and the Ring of Rememberance

Sunday Day 1: We travel to Dover, with comfort stops en-route for our short sea crossing to France and on to our home for the next three nights the 4* Altia Hotel Nouville-en-Ferrain, with time to freshen up before our evening meal.

Monday Day 2:  This morning is spent visiting the Ypres Salient. Our tour takes us to Artillery Wood Cemetery, where Hedd Wyn is buried, Pilkem Ridge with the recently built Welsh Memorial and then to the largest British War Cemetery in the World, Tyne Cot. We then travel to the Hooge Crater museum, a renovated chapel and small school on the Ypres Menin Road. The museum has expanded several times and now holds many of the finest WWI collections in the area. It contains a unique collection of First World War uniforms, displays and military artefacts. We return to Ypres via Hellfire Corner for lunch in this lovely old town, then return to our hotel via Messines Ridge for our early evening meal, before returning to Ypres for the “Last Post”. The Menin Gate was chosen as the place for the memorial, as it was the main gate that many men had passed through on their way to the trenches, a tag line at the time was ‘Tell the last man through to bolt the gate’. The memorial bears the names of 54,896 of those who died between 1914 and 15th Aug 1917 who have no known grave. The simple ceremony of the sounding of the Last Post each and every night at 8pm is carried out by the buglers of the Ypres Fire Brigade.

Tuesday Day 3: Today we travel to the Somme Salient, passing Bapaume, Courcelette and Pozieres to Lochnagar Crater near La Boisselle where units of the 34th Division attacked on 1st July 1916. This formation contained two whole brigades of ‘Pals’ battalions – the Tyneside Irish and the Tyneside Scottish. They suffered many casualties that day – five battalions losing over 500 men each. The whole division lost 6,380 that day. We travel to Mametz Wood to see the striking memorial to the 38th (Welsh) Division who fought there. We continue to Albert for dinner. After lunch we continue to the Newfoundland Memorial Park, Beaumont Hamel. The land was purchased by the Dominion of Newfoundland after the First World War. It was named after the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, which had provided one battalion of 800 men to serve with the British and Commonwealth Armies. It's tragic part in the action of 1 July 1916 is remembered through this memorial park. The site is also a memorial to all the Newfoundlanders who fought in the First World War, most particularly those who have no known grave. Thiepval Memorial, is the largest of the Memorials to the Missing on the Somme, and the last on the Western Front to be unveiled. Negotiations to purchase the site were started in the late 1920s, and the memorial was unveiled by the Prince of Wales. There is now a new visitor centre at the memorial.

Wednesday Day 4:  A new memorial to mark 100 years since the start of WW1 has been inaugurated in northern France with the aim of focusing attention, not on the nations involved, but the individuals. Wilfred Owen's name is there. So is fellow poet Isaac Rosenberg's. Almost 600,000 names - friends and former enemies - mingled together for the first time on a ring of panels, in strict alphabetical order. No ranks, no nationalities; just a dizzying list of the human stories that ended on France's northern battlefields. After a  visit here we continue to Calais and our ferry home.

Foot Note: If there is a cemetery/Memorial you wish to visit, please let us know

The hotel was very good and in a great location. The days out were informative and the countryside beautiful. It was our first trip with you and we hope it will not be the last.
