D-Day Beaches:75th Anniversary - 5 Days

D-Day Beaches:75th Anniversary - 5 Days

Pegasus Bridge Memorial, Arromanches Invasion Museum, Airborne Museum Sainte-Mere– Eglise, Ranville Cemetery, Falaise Memorial

Saturday Day 1: We travel to Dover for our short ferry crossing to Calais and on to our hotel the 3* Ibis Caen Hotel.

Sunday Day 2: Today we start with a visit to Pegasus Bridge and the Memorial Museum before heading to the Ranville British Cemetery, the final resting place of 2,562 brave servicemen. We continue to Ouistreham, then drive past the landing beaches of Sword, Juno and Gold. Our final visit today is to Arromanches for a fascinating visit to the Invasion museum, focusing on the amazing Mulberry Floating Harbour.

Monday Day 3: Today we head west to Sainte-Mere-Eglise, scene of some of the tragic landings of the US paras. At the heart of the town is the church where John Steele was famously caught, hanging from the bell tower by his parachute. The Airborne Museum makes you live and understand the D-Day from the invasion preparations in England, through to the battles for liberation. It has become the largest museum in Europe dedicated to the American paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions engaged in the context of the Normandy invasion in 1944, during the Second World Word. Then it’s on to Pointe Du Hoc, captured after some heroic fighting by the American Rangers. The Monument is located on a cliff eight miles west of Normandy American Cemetery, which overlooks Omaha Beach, France. It was erected by the French to honour elements of the American Second Ranger Battalion under the command of Lt. Col. James E. Rudder. During the American assault of Omaha and Utah beaches on June 6, 1944, these U.S. Army Rangers scaled the 100-foot cliffs and seized the German artillery pieces that could have fired on the American landing troops at Omaha and Utah beaches. At a high cost of life, they successfully defended against determined German counterattacks. We then visit the final resting place for 9,387 souls, the American Cemetery, at Colleville-sur-Mer that overlooks Bloody Omaha beach. Our final visit is to Longues-Sur-Mer Gun Battery, the only one with its original guns still in place.

Tuesday Day 4: Rommel said “the side that controls Hill 112 will be the side that controls Lower Normandy”.  We pay our respects here to the 43rd Wessex Division before travelling to the delightful little village of Pont d’Ouilly, on the River Orne for our coffee break.  Normandy’s most famous son, William the Conqueror was born at Falaise, which was largely destroyed in WWII. The medieval château begun in the 12th century still exists, but has been heavily restored. We leave here after lunch and explore The 'Falaise Pocket'. 50.000 Germans were made prisoner of war and 10.000 lost their life. Despite the losses, between the 20.000 and 40.000 managed to escape. But the Germans had to leave an enormous amount of tanks and other vehicles. Those losses could never be replaced by the German industry.

Wednesday Day 5: : We say goodbye to Caen and make our way back to Calais for our short sea crossing to Dover and home to Mid-Wales.
