Best of Northern Ireland - 5 Days

Best of Northern Ireland - 5 Days

Titanic Visitor Centre, Guided Tour of Belfast, Antrim Coast, Giants Causway, Mountains of Mourne

Sunday Day 1: To Holyhead and our ferry to Ireland. From Port of Dublin we travel north to Belfast and our home for the next 4 nights, the 3* Loughshore Hotel, where a welcome tea/coffee/soft drink awaits before our evening meal.

Monday Day 2: This morning we visit the Titanic Visitor Centre. A century has sailed by since the luxury steamship RMS Titanic met its catastrophic end in the North Atlantic, plunging two miles to the ocean floor after sideswiping an iceberg during its maiden voyage. Rather than the intended Port of New York, a deep-sea grave became the pride of the White Star Line’s final destination in the early hours of April 15, 1912. More than 1,500 people lost their lives in the disaster. In the decades since her demise, Titanic has inspired countless books and several notable films while continuing to make headlines, particularly since the 1985 discovery of her resting place off the coast of Newfoundland. Meanwhile, her story has entered the public consciousness as a powerful cautionary tale about the perils of human hubris. Our local guide will meet us for a guided city tour.  Belfast is a city full of warm, friendly people and, contrary to its reputation, is very safe for tourists. The troubled days of the 1970s and 1980s may not have been conducive to tourism but they have left a legacy that can be explored today. There is a wealth of political history, with the world famous wall murals on view throughout the city.

Tuesday Day 3: Full day excursion around the Antrim Coast. From the County Antrim town of Larne, rugged cliffs stretch north for 80 miles, broken only by 9 deep green glens, each with its own unique character. Winding on past spectacular scenery, we pass the beaches of Ballygally, Glenarm, Carnlough and Cushendall. Our journey culminates in a visit to one of the most amazing natural sights in Europe, the Giant’s Causeway. This magnificent, mysterious formation on the North East coast of County Antrim presents legend, ancient history, astonishing geology and remarkable natural flora and fauna. The setting is a spectacular dynamic coastal landscape of Atlantic waves, rugged cliffs, fascinating geographical antiquity, secluded bays and magnificent views. The Causeway forms a jagged headland of neatly packed columns which point towards Scotland. After our visit here we travel back to our hotel

Wednesday Day 4: Today we travel south to where ‘The Mountains of Mourne Tumble Down to the Sea’.  Ardglass is a picturesque fishing village on the County Down Coast, situated between the Mourne Mountains to the South, and Strangford Lough to the North, in the heart of St. Patrick’s country. It is a working harbour where the local boats trawl for all types of fish, including prawns, lobsters, crabs and the famous Ardglass herring. We stop here for a coffee break. We continue to the small coastal resort of Newcastle for lunch. Lying where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea, this picturesque town in southern County Down has recently received an award wining, multi-million pound makeover. This rejuvenation has firmly placed Newcastle back on the map as the ‘Gateway to the Mournes’. We return to Carrickfergus via Newry

Thursday Day 5: We re-trace our footsteps back to Dublin and our ferry to Holyhead and home to Mid-Wales.

We wanted to thank you for a really great holiday to Northumberland. The coach was very comfortable and brilliantly driven. Dave was a great courier, entertaining us on route. The hotel was very good and in a great location. The days out were informative and the countryside beautiful. It was our first trip with you and we hope it will not be the last.
